A canonical map is a map that is natural in the sense that it interacts nicely with the structure of the spaces involved.

For a simple example, consider a set E and an equivalence relation R on E. The mapping sending some element e of E to its equivalence class [e] in the quotient E/R is a sometimes called called canonical map induced by R.
